By the end of June 2015 all the aging traffic signal controllers in Johannesburg, older than 15 years, will be replaced. The backlog of about 50 old controllers will be replaced within this financial year. Many of the City`s 2,111 traffic signals had old controllers, some dating as far back as 30 years ago, when the municipality manufactured its own controllers. The process of replacing these 600 old controllers started about three to four years ago, when spares for this out-dated equipment became difficult to acquire.
